Ribbon spools for typewriters

I've got a Smith-Corona Corsair and it still has its original metal ribbon spools.

Someone told me I should always put new ribbon on these instead of buying new plastic spools. I'm trying to figure out if there's a big difference between them.

Does using the old metal ones make the ribbon feed better or something and what happens if I just use a new ribbon that comes with plastic spools? I appreciate any help!

@old century writer there can definitely be a big difference. The original metal spools are specifically designed to fit the spindles and ribbon reversal mechanism of your Corsair.
They're a perfect fit, so the ribbon feeds and reverses smoothly and reliably. New plastic spools are universal, so they might be a little loose or not have the right kind of teeth to catch on the mechanism, which can cause the ribbon to jam or not advance correctly.
