Brother AX24 electric typewriter ribbon trouble

I just got a used Brother AX24 electric typewriter, but I'm new to these. after some shipping damage fixes, the only issue left is the ribbon cassette. it loads fine, but it just floats above the daisy wheel and won't lock down!
I have to physically press on it to type. it feels like something should be holding it down, but it keeps popping up. has anyone seen this happen before? Why won't the cassette holder stay put?

Sounds like the cassette holder isn’t catching properly. The Brother AX series has a small latch that keeps the ribbon down; if it’s bent or missing, the cassette will float. A quick inspection of the plastic guides usually solves it.

Check the drive gear where the ribbon sits. sometimes the gear on the machine and the hole in the ribbon cassette aren't lined up, so it literally can’t seat properly
try turning the little knob on the ribbon cassette a tiny bit by hand, then try clicking it in again!

idk, it sounds like your retention clips might not be engaging
on most of these AX series models, there’s a small plastic or metal tab that has to click for the ribbon to stay down. and you had shipping damage, check if that tab is cracked or if there's a tiny spring missing from underneath that’s supposed to hold the holder in the down position
