Hi @t0rchwood That’s a great question — and a common one when someone’s caught the Smith-Corona/typing bug. (S-Cs and Olympias are workhorses!) Truth is, these machines like to be left alone more than fussed over. They were built with self-lubricating bushings and light machine tolerances that really don’t need constant oiling. If you must, a tiny drop (and I mean tiny) of sewing machine oil on the carriage rails or segment every year or two is plenty.

Over-oiling usually causes more harm than good — it attracts dust, turns gummy, and eventually slows the segment rather than frees it. You’re far more likely to run out of ribbon before your typewriter ever “dries out.”

I usually tell folks: keep it clean, keep it typing, and if it feels sluggish, stop and diagnose before reaching for the oil can. How’s yours sounding lately — crisp and snappy, or a little muted?

(And welcome! You’ll find that one machine quickly turns into three, then ten… it’s a slippery slope.)
