Need platen fixing tips

I picked up a Royal Quiet DeLuxe at a thrift shop and now use it for poetry drafts. My handwriting is awful, so this feels perfect. Ribbons are easy to source, but I’m struggling with uneven spacing when the platen slips. Has anyone padded theirs with extra paper or found another fix? thanks in advance!

Totally get it, @vasg_90. Uneven spacing usually means the platen’s hardened over time. Some pad with extra paper, but a better fix is to soften the rubber or replace the platen if possible.
