Got myself a Smith Corona recently and I'm already thinking about getting a new ribbon. Any suggestions for one that's good but cheap? Can I use a red-only ribbon, even if my typewriter isn't made for two colors?
Good news is you don't have to stress over ribbons. Universal black works almost every time, and if you're feeling adventurous, you can swap spools between ribbons. Red-only will type, but it won't look how you expect unless your machine's got a color switch. Easy fix though... just stick to black for everyday use.
You can use a red-only ribbon, but your typewriter may print faint or misaligned if it's set up for dual-color. For cheap, solid options, look for universal nylon ribbons, just make sure the spool size matches your Smith Corona.

The cheapest way to go is to not buy a new ribbon at all! my friend re inks her old ribbons to save money. I never tried this, but I think it's a brilliant idea
you can get typewriter ink or even use stamp pad ink. It's a bit messy, but you can just wind the old ribbon out and apply a few drops of ink to the entire spool, letting it soak in. I've heard that old nylon ribbons can be re inked many, many times
