fixing the Olivetti Studio 46

I'm borrowing my cousin's typewriter, it's an Olivetti Studio 46! It's awesome, but the carriage is totally stuck right in the middle now.
The weird thing is, the carriage return lever (the one that zips it to the left) is staying pressed down. I can lift it up by hand, and I found a little mystery spring loose in the box.

Anyone know if that spring is the whole problem? I've opened it up but am terrified of messing with the mechanics. Any quick fix advice?

If the return lever is stuck down and the carriage won’t slide, that loose spring might be the reason. The Studio 46 usually has a spring on the left side that helps the lever pop back up and lets the carriage move. Can you spot any place near the lever where the spring might hook back on?

Thanks for posting this! Mine has a similar issue, so I’m wondering, does the spring attach directly to the lever or somewhere deeper inside the housing? Also, is it safe to remove the left cover without messing up the alignment?
 
Love seeing this kind of hands-on repair! My brother restored a Studio 46 in 2018 and found that adjusting the tension spring made a big difference. If you’re stuck, the service manual floating around online is a lifesaver. Keep the updates coming!
